The 30th World Climate Summit COP30 will take place from 10 to 21 November 2025 in the Brazilian city of Belém. While COP29 is known as the finance COP, this year's COP will focus on the implementation of the Global Goal on Adaptation. According to Prof. Dr. Lisa Schipper, the term ‘adaptation COP’ is a necessary extension.
In a press briefing, she emphasises the importance and necessity of adapting to the climate crisis. Climate adaptation should not be viewed in isolation, but is directly linked to development and justice. Adaptation could become a matter of survival, as emissions are not falling fast enough and there is a lack of political will. Those who have contributed least to the climate crisis are the most affected.
In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Prof. Dr. Lisa Schipper therefore emphasises that we must not give up because too much is at stake. It would be an important symbol if Germany continued to make a major contribution. Nevertheless, she sees the first large-scale participation of indigenous representatives at this year's COP as a hopeful moment for climate justice.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Lisa Schipper is featured as an expert guest in the second episode of the COPOut podcast on the topic of ‘(Mal)Adaptation and Climate Shocks’ hosted by Dr. Dana R. Fisher. There, she talks with Rod Schoonover from the Ecological Futures Group and Dana R. Fisher about the intersection of climate change, development, and security. They also discuss the unintended consequences of climate adaptation and their expectations for COP30.
