Die Exkursionleiter*innen stellen ihre Exkursionen in einer Infoveranstaltung am Donnerstag, 16. Oktober 2025 um 10:15 Uhr im Alfred -Philippson-Hörsaal vor. Die Anmeldung zu den Exkursionen ist vom 16. bis  26. Oktober 2025 in BASIS möglich. Anschließend findet die Zuteilung statt. Indonesia

• Leitung: Lisa Schipper + local colleagues
• Die Exkursion: Coastal settlements in Indonesia, where communities have been working to build resilience. The trip will go to Bali, Lombok and Gili islands.
  
• Inhalt: The trip will explore how people in coastal settlements in Indonesia are addressing the risk of coastal hazards, including tsunamis. We will meet with local researchers, community leaders and key cultural actors to understand the challenges associated with protecting coastal areas, explore how different development priorities can clash, and the role of tourism on development and the environment. An overarching theme in the excursion will be culture and change. We will attempt to explore the themes through a decolonial lens, asking questions about dominating narratives and power (im)balances throughout. Although the focus is human geography, coastal erosion and other physical processes will also be discussed. Participants will be tasked with small research projects and carry out data collection while in the field. 
• Zeitraum: Early September 2026 (dates to be set by early 2026)
• Anforderungen: English is necessary. Basic Bahasa could be useful. Ability to cope with high heat and humidity and different cultural and social settings, are all necessary. All of the locations should be mostly accessible to anyone with disabilities unless sitting in a wheelchair; this will be discussed and arranged once the group is known. Vegetarians and Vegans are welcome and should be easy to accommodate.
• Kosten: The costs should not exceed 1.200 EUR per person - we will aim to keep costs as low as possible. That amount includes costs like ferry rides to Lombok and Gili from Bali. Overland transport will likely include local buses or arranged buses. Accommodation will be in simple guest houses in shared rooms. Participants should expect to cover their own evening meals on most nights. Flights from Germany are not included in this calculation. Current flight prices to Denpasar (Bali) could be around 1.400 EUR - but this depends on your route and airline. Visa and insurance costs also need to be taken into account.

• Inhalt: Chile is often described as the economic development success story of Latin America. Under the military dictatorship in the 1970s, the country adopted neoliberal reforms in all aspects of the economy and society, and pursued export-oriented natural resource industries –including agriculture, minerals, and timber – for global markets. While Chile has achieved impressive rates of economic growth and levels of infrastructure and services, this has come at the cost of severe social inequalities and environmental degradation. Since the return to democracy in the 1990s, successive governments have sought to maintain the neoliberal model with greater attention to social equity and environmental protection. However, this direction has been deeply contested, with scholars describing “sacrifice zones” that are heavily degraded for economic gain, and inequality driving the social revolt that started in 2019 and culminated in two failed attempts to reform the Constitution. This field course will examine how the country’s development model has shaped its economic activities, social structures, and landscapes, with particular attention to the uneven spatial dynamics of investment and the unequal distribution of benefits and risks. Based in Santiago and central Chile (approximately from the Valparaíso to the Biobío regions), we will look at the production of public and private urban space; social inequalities relating to housing, infrastructure and work; water governance, scarcity and security; and the conditions of production of export commodities and associated socio-environmental conflicts. The field course will be run in collaboration with local academics, organisations and communities. 
• Zeitraum: Preparatory seminars: February 2026; field trip: March 2026; follow-up seminars: May-June 2026
• Anforderungen: This is a human geography field trip, with a focus on governance and development, and students will need to engage with these themes both theoretically and empirically through the preparation and assessments. Much of the field course content is given in Spanish; while key inputs will be translated into English, at least Abitur-level Spanish skills are highly beneficial for engaging with stakeholders and materials beyond that input. You will need the physical ability to walk for long periods/distances (disabilities will be accommodated as far as possible), good walking shoes and clothing, a field diary (A5 notebook), and a (phone) camera. A serious, ethically-aware and flexible attitude is essential to work appropriately in Latin America and to engage with lower-income groups. Comprehensive health insurance is required, and non-EU passport holders may need a visa for Chile.
• Kosten: Approximately 1300€, including accommodation (B&B in shared rooms in basic hotels/hostels), local travel (public transport and private minibus), tours and activities. Travel between Bonn and Santiago and other personal costs (insurance, visa, meals) are not included.
