Intermittency in Headwater Streams – Challenges and Opportunities from an Interdisciplinary Perspective

Hydrology Conference in Bonn, June 4 - 6, 2024
(5th and 6th full day, evening of the 4th.)

Streams play a vital role in the global hydrological and biogeochemical cycle. However, chronic global change is expected to impact their streamflow and the consequences for ecosystem health remain uncertain. Especially headwater streams experience streamflow intermittency and this intermittency is predicted to occur more frequently in the future. There is a clear need to study hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes within headwater streams to better anticipate the future consequences of reduced streamflow on these sensitive systems. We seek to develop an interdisciplinary perspective from stream biogeochemistry and ecology, hillslope hydrology, and hydrology of the groundwater-surface exchange, yet all related to stream intermittency in headwaters. The program will consist of an icebreaker event on June 4, presentations on June 5, and a workshop on June 6, 2024. During the workshop sessions, we will collaborate in working groups to outline and synthesize future directions. We invite contributions for both poster and oral presentations on both experimental and modeling studies.
We particularly encourage submissions related to the following topics:

  • Current advancements in monitoring flow intermittency
  • Connections between water flow and biogeochemical and/or ecological processes
  • Influence of catchment characteristics on flow intermittency
  • Modeling and predicting flow intermittency

Please apply early, as this event has a maximum number of participants. The event may become oversubscribed (full) before the application deadline. Applications for oversubscribed seats will only be considered by the organization committee if more seats become available due to cancellations. Please be aware that submitting an application does not constitute registration for the event.
