Research Focus
I am a senior professor of human geography, specialising in development geography, at the University of Bonn’s Department of Geography. Having lived
and worked in the Middle East (Egypt, Algeria, Oman and Sudan) and Eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania) for many years, my research focuses on
the following four areas:
- the constitution of risk and risk management strategies in relation to space ('riskscapes'), particularly in the context of climate change and adaptation
- geographies of the future and future-making practices, especially how African societies envisage and shape their own futures (futureruralafrica)
- the political ecology of water and resource governance
- green narratives in the context of reforestation and landscape restoration programmes
I am a member of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC-TRR 228) ‘Future
Rural Africa’, and project leader of ‘Green Futures’. My current research
activities concentrate on two projects. The ‘Green Futures’ project, which is
jointly conducted with my colleagues Jessica Budds and Eric Kioko, and in
collaboration with African research partners, investigates the reorganisation of water distribution and questions of water governance in Kenya and Tanzania.
The second project studies the implementation of the Great Green Wall in Ethiopia, taking it as an example of a ‘green imaginary’ and a ‘travelling model’
of landscape restoration. This project is part of a collaboration with partners in
the UK (Jeremy Allouche), France/Senegal (Priscilla Duboz), and Ethiopia
(Belay Simane).
Prior to joining the University of Bonn, I taught at the universities of Berlin (FU), Leipzig and Bayreuth. I completed my studies in geography, social anthropology and agriculture at the University of Göttingen and also hold a Master´s degree in Middle East Studies and Arabic from the American University in Cairo.
