From October 9 onwards, new first-year students were welcomed to the Department of Geography at the University of Bonn. From October 13-17, the traditional orientation week, or O-Week for short, took place, designed to help new students get started with their studies. The student council also organised a varied programme of introductory activities, such as a bachelor's and master's rally.

Welcome!

The lecture hall was full again at the start of this year's semester: we welcomed a total of 173 new students at the Bachelor's first semester welcome event on October 9. 132 young people are starting their Bachelor of Science degree, 30 students are beginning their teacher training, and 11 have chosen geography as a minor subject and are studying a core subject from the Faculty of Arts.

In addition, the orientation week began on October 13 to help students get started with their studies. Research assistants from the Department of Geography provided an insight into everyday academic life at the department and information about starting a Bachelor's degree. This was supplemented by an extensive introductory programme organised by the Geography Student Council.

On Monday, October 13, we welcomed the first-year students of our Master's programmes to the Alfred Philippson Lecture Hall: 77 students in the Master of Science programme and 11 students in the Master of Education Geography programme are beginning their studies. The student council also organised an orientation programme for the first-year Master's students, as not all of them completed their Bachelor's degree in Bonn and are new to the institute and the city.

Many more students have begun their studies in other master's programmes. These include 22 students in the Joint Master's programme M.Sc. Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security, which is offered in collaboration with the United Nations University.

This brings the total number of students at the Institute to 1,131.

We warmly welcome everyone and wish our students a great semester and our first-year students a good start to their studies!
