Benedikt Walker and Dr. Linus Kalvelage (University of Cologne) have won the 2024 JOEG Early Career Researcher Paper Prize for their study of Germany’s extraterritorial role in Namibia’s green hydrogen industry. Their paper reveals how states use de-risking, asset creation and market-building to steer global production networks, even in liberal economies. Successful Defense of Dissertation for Chigozie Nweke-Eze
On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Chigozie Nweke-Eze successfully defended his dissertation entitled "Economic Geographies of Large-Scale Renewable Energies Development in Kenya: Financing, Governance, and Infrastructures". His dissertation advances energy transition studies by incorporating geographical perspectives and examining power dynamics that shape the development and realization of renewable energy projects in Kenya.

Andrew Cumbers New Visiting Professor at GIUB
Professor Cumbers is a distinguished economic geographer and will be a part of the working group until end-2024.. His research interests include economic democracy, urban and regional development, public and collective ownership, and employment relations. His work is published widely in leading journals of human geography and economics.
New DFG Project by the Economic Geography Working Group
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved a research project on the governance of the German hydrogen economy, which will start in June 2023 and run for a total of three years. Britta Klagge (PI) and Benedikt Walker will conduct the project.
Company Visit to SGL Carbon
A mixed group of bachelor’s and master’s students gained practical insights during a tour of SGL Carbon in Bonn-Mehlem. The company is over 100 years old and is located west of the Mehlem train station, surrounded by residential and commercial areas, which means that the (virtually nonexistent) opportunities for expansion pose a challenge.
