Obituary: Prof. Dr. Klaus Fehn Obituary: Prof. Dr. Klaus Fehn

Prof. Dr. Klaus Fehn passed away on 28 June 2026, shortly after his 90th birthday. He was born in Munich on 14 March 1936. Although he was never a member of the Department of Geography at the University of Bonn, he maintained close ties to the institute in many respects and had a lasting influence on its development.

From 1972 to 2001, Prof. Fehn held the Chair of Historical Geography in the Faculty of Arts. The former Department of Historical Geography was located at Konviktstraße 11.

Prof. Fehn reoriented the chair, which had previously focused on the Historical Geography of the Mediterranean, towards the Historical Geography of Central Europe. He also developed pioneering concepts in Applied Historical Geography and cultural landscape conservation. This laid the foundation for close cooperation between Historical Geography and the former geographical institutes, particularly in teaching. At the same time, it provided the basis for the integration of Historical Geography into the Department of Geography with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Winfried Schenk in 2001. As a result, the department gained an additional professorship, together with its staff and infrastructure. This successful integration was due in large part to the efforts of Prof. Dr. Fehn. The Department of Geography mourns the loss of a dedicated scholar whose work bridged the disciplines of History and Geography.
