Protection against Violence and Sexualized Harrassment
Universities as places of work and study are also environments in which violence and sexualized assaults take place. In particular, the pronounced hierarchies and dependency relationships at universities can lead to subtle forms of violence and sexualized harassment. In addition to the general taboo surrounding the topic, these power relations make it even more difficult for victims to defend themselves against such attacks.
The Department of Geography strives to enable all its members and affiliates to work together in an equal, non-discriminatory, respectful and trusting manner. The GIUB therefore resolutely opposes any behavior of violence and sexualized harassment.

What Is Sexualized Violence?
Sexualized discrimination and violence within the meaning of this guideline cover acts that result in sexual harassment, degradation or discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual orientation or gender identity. This includes criminal acts as well as low-threshold acts that affected persons perceive as degrading. Sexual harassment within the meaning of the General Equal Treatment Act occurs when sexually explicit verbal or non-verbal behavior has the purpose or effect of violating the dignity of the person concerned, which is particularly the case when an environment characterized by intimidation, hostility, humiliation, degradation or insults is created.

Recommendations for Action and Prevention
Members and associates of the university should be encouraged not to accept violence and sexualized discrimination, but to make their rejection unmistakably clear and to take active action against it.

Representatives of various status groups are involved in the Working Group on Protection against Violence. Here you will find a list of contacts who have been trained to provide advice on discrimination and violence and who are available to you as contact persons at the Department of Geography. In terms of protection against violence, all of the persons listed here have the same function. You can contact any of them with your concerns.
Students can, of course, always contact the student council or Liaison Lecturers first and then decide together which other people should be involved.

Central Equal Opportunities Officer
The central equal opportunities officer is usually the first point of contact. As part of the consultation, incidents can first be classified, facts clarified and first steps for further action planned. This can be done both formally and informally. It is very important that nothing is done without the consent of the person concerned.
