Since 2010, Prof. Dr. Christian Geiß has been working at the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) as chair of the Georisk working group. Since 01.04.2023 he is now additionally Professor for Georisk Research with Remote Sensing Methods at the Institute of Geography. This is a joint professorship with DLR and the University of Bonn according to the Jülich model. This means that performance tasks at the non-university research institution and thus fewer university obligations go hand in hand. Prof. Geiß will be at GIUB on a regular basis with a teaching load of 2 SWS in addition to his research projects at DLR.

Prof. Geiß received his PhD from Humboldt University in Berlin in 2014 and subsequently worked on his habilitation at the University of Würzburg with a focus on "Collective Sensing Techniques and Artificial Intelligence for Natural Hazard Risk and Impact Assessment".

In his research, Prof. Geiß mainly focuses on the development of machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence for natural hazard risk assessment and monitoring. Further research areas are multimodal remote sensing of built-up areas, analysis of vulnerability and disposition in the context of natural hazards, and automation of damage mapping after natural disasters.

In Bonn, Prof. Geiß would like to network with various stakeholders, such as ZFL, UNU and BBK, but also with other chairs at GIUB.

We are happy to welcome Prof. Dr. Christian Geiß at our institute and wish him a successful start!
