Eight of the 14 eight-thousanders are located in the Nepalese Himalayas. The extreme topography is reflected in the difference in altitude of over 8,000 m from the lowlands to the highest summits over a distance of only 170 km. Numerous natural hazards (including earthquakes, gravitational mass movements, flash floods) threaten people and their belongings. At the same time, Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. In the hybrid lecture and discussion we will focus on natural risks in the Annapurna region and how to deal with them. It is shown that road construction can promote development on the one hand, but may increase risks on the other. Finally, the risk management of glacial lake outbursts in the Everest region will be discussed.
