La Sapienza University (from the Italian sapienza, meaning "wisdom"), officially Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza" and also known as the University of Rome I, is the largest university in Europe and the oldest in the city of Rome. Originally founded as a papal institution, La Sapienza was established on April 20, 1303, by Pope Boniface VIII to educate candidates for the priesthood in close proximity to the Holy See. Today, the university hosts around 120,000 students across its 11 faculties, including approximately 8,000 international students.
