Organizational Structure

The basic structure of the Department of Geography is formed by its general management and nine scientific areas with a total of 15 research groups. They are the basis for research in three different research areas and teaching in a total of seven study programs.

The Department of Geography at the University of Bonn comprises, on the administrative level, the General Management and the Executive Board. The current Managing Director is Prof. Dr. Kathrin Hörschelmann.

At the Department of Geography, nine scientific areas with a total of 15 researchgroups groups make up the research and teaching portfolio:

The scientific research of the research groups focuses in its basic orientation on the three research areas water, risk and geomatics. In research, there is close cooperation with the Center for Remote Sensing of Land Surfaces and the Center for Development Research at the University of Bonn.

At the Department of Geography of the University of Bonn, undergraduate students can obtain the degrees Bachelor of Science or Bachelor Geography Teacher Training. Building on the Bachelor's programs, the Department offers five advanced Master's programs: In the Master of Science Geography, students have the opportunity to specialize in one of the four directions offered - Development and Globalization, Governance and Space, Environmental Systems in Transition, or Water in Global Change - or to design an individual study profile. The Bachelor of Education Geography is followed by the Master of Education Geography. In addition to the Master of Science Geography and the Master of Education, the Department of Geography offers three other Master's programs organized in cooperation with partners both internal and external to the university.The Master of Science Nature Conservation and Landscape Ecology is offered in cooperation with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Bonn.The internationally oriented and English-language Master of Science program Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security is offered in cooperation with the United Nations University. The Master of Disaster Management and Risk Governance is a continuing education program offered in cooperation with the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance.

The expertise of the Institute of Geography is complemented by external cooperations in the fields of nature conservation (Hon.-Prof. Dr. Erdmann), landscape and waters (Hon.-Prof. Dr. Zumbroich), medical geography and public health (Prof. Dr. Kistemann) and by the cooperation with the United Nations University.
