Overview of research topics, curriculum vitae as well as research projects and publications of Prof. Dr. Nadine Marquardt.

About

I am an urban, social and political geographer and professor of Social Geography at Universität Bonn. I received my PhD and Habilitation in Geography from the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and hold a Diplom in Political Sciences from Freie Universität Berlin.

I work on questions of housing, dwelling and home. I am particularly interested in the techno- and biopolitics that condition the inhabitation of space and shape the experience of dwelling. My work builds on theories and methodologies in Governmentality, STS, feminist theory and critical theory.

My empirical research gravitates around (in)secure and precarious forms of housing in various articulations. My PhD analyzed the securitization of new inner-city luxury housing through architecture, surveillance technologies, and enforced social control. In my habilitation, I examined the historical and contemporary (neoliberal) governing of homelessness in Germany, with particular attention given to temporary accommodations for homeless people and the limited possibilities of dwelling and homemaking in these institutional spaces. Another research project examined social integration programs targeting migrant neighbourhoods in German cities that turn the domestic spaces of migrant populations into sites of intervention and behavior change.

My current research continues to explore the intersection of home, technology and governance. One focus is on the proliferation of the so called “smart home”. A research project funded by the DFG takes a critical approach to the politics and promises of smart homes for older people. Together with Marlene Hobbs and Linda Pasch, I examine the role of assistive technologies in responding to the ongoing care crisis in Germany, and interrogate their promises to enable ageing in place. I also wrote on how the smart home gets enrolled in current efforts to implement the energy transition and to promote “post-fossil lifestyles”. In another research project funded by the DFG, Julia Verne and I investigate the geographies of humanitarian design and precarious housing by focussing on shelter technologies. The project follows so called “shelter kits” from sites of design and production through distribution infrastructures to sites of use in the Global North and South to demonstrate how these artefacts co-produce the social worlds of humanitarian aid.
