Biography

Julian Rochlitz is a Research Associate and PhD Candidate at the Department of Geography since March 2016. Previously, he studied Human Geographie in Eichstätt, Rouen and Frankfurt, where he obtained his Master’s with a thesis on “Digital smallholders – mobile information systems as sociotechnical devices of market-based agrarian development in Ghana”. For his PhD project, Julian has been selected for a DAAD scholarship (October 2017 – April 2018) to conduct field research in Kenya. Here, he is concerned with questions on the production of mobile-phone based services and on the digitally mediated translation of environmental knowledge into agricultural practices. His project therefore engages in broader debates on ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development), the transformation of small-scale agriculture in Africa and the relationships between society, technology and nature.
