Childhood memories of Cold War times and beyond: between connections and divisions – website link

Together with Dr. Kathleen Falkenberg and Dr. Nadine Bernhard of the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the AG Kulturgeographie is organising an international and interdisciplinary conference on the topic of childhood memories of Cold War times and beyond. The aim of this conference is to bring together researchers and artists working across the social sciences and humanities to illuminate how childhood was experienced by children, young people and parents on both sides of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War and the subsequent transformation years. It will also be discussed to what extent memories of this time can contribute to overcoming or reinforcing (current) borders.

The conference in Berlin will be one of five parallel satellite conferences. The other locations are Tampere (Finland), Atlanta (USA), Cape Town (South Africa) and Hajdúböszörmény (Hungary). Using the model of "decentred satelite conferencing" (DSC), we are pursuing the goal of testing more climate-neutral forms of scientific exchange and at the same time enabling new formats of collaboration across national borders. The conference is part of the international RE-CONNECT / RE-COLLECT project, which is  funded by the KONE Foundation.

Location: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, date: 20-22 October 2021. We are currently planning a digital-only event on 20 October and hybrid formats (presence/digital) on the other two days. Depending on the pandemic situation, the concrete form will be decided at a later stage.
