UNESCO Chair in Human-Water Systems

UNESCO Chair in Human-Water Systems

The United Nations Educational and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) has established the UNESCO Chair in Human-Water Systems in collaboration with the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. The new chair is headed by Prof. Dr. Mariele Evers, who also chairs the Scientific Advisory Board for UNESCO's and the World Meteorological Organization's water research programs in Germany. The UNESCO Chair conducts research on the sustainable use of water as a resource from an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective, with a particular focus on the relationship between climate, water and nutrition issues, as well as hydrological extremes and variability in Southeast Asia as well as in Africa.
The activities of the Chair in Bonn include in particular research, teaching, capacity development and generation of decision-relevant knowledge for and with practitioners, realized through a network of international collaborations. Another goal is the establishment of an international science center for human-water systems research.
In the global network of UNESCO Chairs, more than 750 UNESCO Chairs in more than 110 countries cooperate to anchor UNESCO's goals in science and education. They excel in research and teaching in UNESCO's areas of work. The principles of their work include international networking, especially in the North-South and North-South areas, and the promotion of intercultural dialogue. UNESCO Chairs contribute worldwide to the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge to promote sustainable development.
With the establishment of this Chair in Bonn, there are now 14 UNESCO Chairs in Germany contributing to the implementation of the Global Sustainability Agenda.
