Research Areas



The research areas, which complement each other and coincide, are reflected mostly in the research projects but also to some extent in teaching at the Department of Geography. They pool the competences at the department as well as in the research groups. The topics of the research areas encompass a wide range of research questions, which can only be encountered adequately with inter- and transdisciplinary exchange.

The emphasis of the research areas is thus the scientific networking within the department as well as an intensive cooperation in the Geoverbund ABC/J, the geoscientific network of the Aachen-Bonn-Cologne/Jülich research area, and on a national and international level.



The research area of "Risk" at the Department of Geography is situated at the interface of nature and society. This enables an interdisciplinary bridge between the natural scientific process oriented research of Physical Geography with its social and cultural science approach. Using these differing perspectives, natural disasters such as floods or landslides can be assessed and application oriented, interdisciplinary research towards risk management established.




The most important resource of the 21st century is water. Therefore, one focus of interest at the Department of Geography concerns water. It needs to be addressed on both a natural and social science levels and in both spatial and temporal scales. The interdisciplinary approach requires us to consider not only the quantity and quality of water but also the demands of society and ecosystems. Extreme events like floods and droughts link "Water" close to the research area of "Risk".




As a main research area of the Department of Geography, Geomatics is committed to methodological research. This encompasses the development and analysis of methods for collecting, managing, analysing, modelling, and presenting geospatial structures and processes. Geomatics combines the different disciplines of remote sensing, GIS, geostatistics, cartography and spatial explicit modeling and analysis. This broad range of methods forms a solid foundation for the interdisciplinary integration of physical and human geography in response to research questions in the context of socio-ecological systems. Geomatics delivers scientifically sound concepts for spatial planning, land-use management and sustainable development of coupled human-environment systems. In addition to basic research, it is first of all the applied research which addresses current environmental considerations and land management, that makes Geomatics a key technology for the 21st century.
