Dissertationsprojekt
My dissertation was concerned with the spatialities of climate politics in Eastern Africa and Uganda in particular. Critically engaging with recent debates in the social sciences that diagnose the post-political condition of the fight against climate change and its effects, it considered those instances in which predominant ways of governing the predicament are challenged by antagonistic action. It employed the political philosophy of Jacques Rancière and his distinction between 'the political' and 'the police' to investigate the different kinds of disagreement (the ‘political’) with the prevalent practice of mitigating and adapting to climate change (the ‘police’). In doing so, the dissertation made the case for considering climate governance as a spatially dispersed undertaking, enacted at different sites by international organisations, Ugandan state institutions and non-governmental organisations, and local populations and ecosystems. This undertaking is characterised by distinct configurations of the post-political condition of the ‘climate police’ and various forms of disagreement. Rather than considering disagreement as a necessarily conspicuous process, as conceived by Rancière, I argued that in practice, the political moments of challenging the predominant climate police often unfold in the shadows of official representations of the endeavour and therefore need careful ethnographical attention.
