DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, concern has grown about places in Europ
e and North America ‘left behind’ by globalisation and technological c
hange. ‘Left behind places’ (LBPs) have become a key focus in economic
geography\, with research on economic trends\, employment\, and policy. Y
et\, less attention has been given to how people experience these changes.
Little is known about residents’ employment strategies and service acce
ss. This paper fills that gap with research in France\, Germany\, and the
UK. Quantitative analysis shows most stay rather than leave. Qualitative r
esearch from six case studies highlights limited job options\, few higher-
paid roles\, and declining factory work. However\, some residents have ass
ets allowing broader access to jobs\, services\, and leisure. Respondents
also noted reduced service access and facility closures\, worsening long-t
erm decline\, especially in the UK and rural France.
