Three Geography Departments

In 1963, the Department of Geography, the Department of Economic Geography and the Department of Historical Geography were subsumed under a single organizational unit, the Geography Departments of the University of Bonn.

Each department was run by a management board. The Department of Historical Geography belonged to the Faculty of Arts while the Department of Geography and the Department of Economic Geography were part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science.

While the Department of Historical Geography was located at Konviktstraße 11 (Campus City), the Department of Geography and the Department of Economic Geography formed an organisational unit in the building at Meckenheimer Allee 166 (Campus Poppelsdorf).

One Department of Geography

On July 13, 2000 the Geography Departments were merged in accordance with a decision of the Academic Senate to form a single Department of Geography. This did not take effect for the Department of Historical Geography until a new Professor of Historical Geography was appointed in the winter semester of 2001. The Department of Historical Geography moved from Konviktstraße 11 to Meckenheimer Allee 166 in March 2002. At the same time, the existing sub-departments of the individual departments were dissolved and a new system was created with seven disciplinary areas, one central unit and several central services (general managment).
