DESCRIPTION:The Southern Alps offer excellent opportunities to investigate
  Holocene glacier chronologies. Reasonable numbers of studies have been ca
 rried out to date\, but considerable degrees of uncertainty and significan
 t differences between individual chronologies still persist. The final res
 ults of a recent research project on the Holocene glacier chronology in th
 e Southern Alps utilising a multi-proxy approach of 10Be cosmogenic radion
 uclide and Schmidt-hammer exposure-age dating\, combined with rigorous geo
 morphological analysis and mapping\, will be presented. It will be argued 
 that an understanding of the individual character of single glacier record
 s and the need for climatic/glaciological spatial differentiation is essen
 tial before any compilation of a representative chronology for the entire 
 Southern Alps should be attempted. Additionally\, measures to tackle the '
 geomorphological uncertainty' must inevitably become integrated in any rel
 ated future approaches.
