Geomorphological perspectives on sediments under global change

Vast amounts of unconsolidated sediments are stored in high-mountain areas on all spatial scales, which are relevant in many perspectives: They can pose a hazard to human society and infrastructure, store water in the form of permafrost ice, are an important industrial resource or can cause siltation of water reservoirs. Nonetheless, little is known about the distribution, volumes, morphology and residence time of sediment storages. Especially the formation of outsize fans, which are strikingly large fans with unlikely small feeder basins, remains largely unknown. Not under- standing the processes of large landforms is problematic regarding their hazard potential. Thus, we investigated three outsize fans with a multi-method approach to contribute to the gradualism vs. catastrophism debate in fan formation, and therefore to a better quantitative understanding of these landforms.
