„Water Resources and
Management
in a Changing World“
The International
Alumni Summer School “Water Resources and Management in a Changing World” is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and represented by
Prof. Dr. Bernd Diekkrüger. The program was organized by the Department of Geography in Bonn and the Institute for Technology and
Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT) of the Cologne
University of Applied Sciences (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jackson Roehrig)
The summer school will take place at the Department of Geography in Bonn
from September 24th to October 5th 2012.
Aims and Topics
In order to understand and address the impacts of global change on water
resources and water management, an interdisciplinary and holistic approach is of
utmost importance. The International Alumni Summer School therefore aims to
- provide sound scientific knowledge on various aspects of water resources and water resource management including: the water cycle, regional case
studies, the quantification of the impacts of global change on water resources, risk and vulnerability, and governance patterns
and management strategies (see Fig.1)
- enhance the appreciation and thereby the dialog between
decision-makers from different scientific backgrounds as well as between stakeholders
in order to exchange knowledge, to learn from one another and to improve
management and policy decisions.
The summer school uses the structure of the DPSIR
(Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) approach which allows for intensive
discussion about feedbacks and dialog between the different stakeholders. Within
this framework, the summer school is divisible into five main topics. The first
topic engages with aspects of global change (climate change, land use and
land cover change, demographic and socio-economic change) which act as drivers
and have an impact on water quantity and quality. The remaining topics address the
challenges and opportunities of water management and modeling, risk and
vulnerability assessment as well as adaptation strategies through governance and management.
All topics will be intensively discussed using regional case studies from two
German catchments (Erft & Rhein), as well as case studies from the various countries
of the participants.
