3D Routing through OpenStreetMap 3D available at OSM-3D.org - Monday July 6th 2009 - Alexander Zipf |
User now can plan a route online at OSM-3D.org and then interactively fly along the route presented in 3D.
Currently the routing is available for cars (fastest/shortest) as well as for pedestrians or bicycles for all of Germany.
It is also possible to create an animation that follows the 3D route automatically. The application is powered by an extended version of OpenRouteService.org and uses the free data from OpenStreetMap.org and the OpenLS interface specifications of the Open Geospatial Consortium. The data from OSM-3D.org is generated by combining data from OpenStreetMap and SRTM elevation data. Start and Stop of the route can be specified by picking into the 3D scene or by searching for adresses using the OSM-based OpenLS geocoder. Turn by turn instructions are available for several languages. Further options inludce a graph of the height profile of the route and others. The new download version of the XNavigator W3DS-Client also supports the integration of dynamic sensor data (air pollution, water gauge etc.) into the 3D scene in a first version. http://www.osm-3d.org |

This means that through the OpenLS directory service you can search for Points of Interests (POIs) of different types. The user can specify a location and a search distance and the categories of POIs to be found. Currently more than 50 different categories of objects are available. These are based on relevant tags of OpenStreetMap. Also the OpenLS Utility Service (Geocoder/ReverseGeocoder) is now available for the whole of Europe through OpenRouteService (beta-version). This means it is possible to get the coordinates for a given address (city & streetname). Vice versa it is possible to return addresses for a given set of coordinates. Further also the ORS Web Map Service (OGC WMS) now covers the whole of Europe (also the TileCache version). These three services work also in European countries, which are not yet supported by the routing functionality of OpenRouteService. |

| OpenLS Directory Service integrated into GDI-3D using OSM data - Friday August, 15th 2008 - Alexander Zipf |
It is now possible to access an OpenLS Directory Service, perform spatial queries for Points of Interest (POIs) and display them in 3D within our W3DS-Client XNavigator. XNavigator has been implemented for visualizing web-based 3D city and landscape models delivered through a OGC Web 3D Service (W3DS). A first example application is Heidelberg-3D that can be accessed at www.gdi-3d.de. The POIs have been imported from the OpenStreetMap data. They contain a variety of important and interesting locations like shops, ATMs, cafes, pharmacies, bus stops, hotels, night clubs, and many more. The possible categories are unlimited and the data is being extended rapidly. The user can click on the map and search for specific types of locations within a selected radius. The result is shown as 3D labels using the OSM symbols. |

| 3D Smoke Emission Simulation based on OGC standards - Friday July, 25th 2008 - Alexander Zipf |
As a showcase for demonstrating the potential of applying the OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) standard as a means to integrate the results from 3D simulations into applications based a 3D geospatial data infrastructure (www.gdi-3d.de), we integrated a very simplified 3D smoke emission simulation. The simulation does not mean to provide a realistic result currently (it is not a physical model!). It only shall demonstrate the potential of using of the OpenGIS WPS in a 3D environment. The WPS caclulating the 3D simulation gets as input the location of the origin of the smoke emission and then dynamically queries a OGC Sensor Observation Service (SOS) for the current speed and direction of the wind. Based on this the WPS calculates a simplified 3D object that is returned and visualized in the 3D viewer. The 3D spatial data infrastructure has been built on several OpenGIS Web Services (OWS) such as WMS, WFS, WPS, OpenLS, SOS and of course the Web 3D Service (W3DS).
A live demonstration is available at www.heidelberg-3d.de. |

Searching for specific locations such as hotels, restaurants, ATM machines or toilets is the typical application for location based services (LBS). For that purpose the OGC has introduced the OpenLS directory service specification. OpenRouteService.org supports now this interface for searching a wide range of points of interest (POIs) wihtin a given distance from any location, based on the user-generated content of [[ http://www.OpenStreetMap.org ]]. Further enhancements of OpenRouteService.org include the download of calculated routes as GPX files and extended route instructions for Germany and English (indicated by a *). Objects that intersect the route such as traffic lights or (small) roundabouts are now mentioned in the instruction. |

| First Germany wide Bike-Routing - Monday June, 30th 2008 - Alexander Zipf | |
| First Germany wide Bike-Routing based on open standards and data online
www.OpenRouteService.org (ORS) offers not only pedestrian and fastest
and shortes routing based on the OpenGIS Open Location Service
specifications (OpenLS), but utilizes now also the user-generated data
from OpenStreetMap (OSM) for bicycle routing for the whole of Germany.
The OpenStreetMap data needs to be preprocessed in order to calculate a
topological network valid for routing. This processing generates
currently about 2 million street segements for Germany. Further extensions are in work and planned. We are interested in your feedback! |

| www.OpenRouteService.org now offers also the possibility to calculate
the region that can be reached within a given period of time from any
given point in Germany. The calculation is performed based on our "Accessibility Analysis Service (AAS)" using the topological street network that has been generated from free
OpenStreetMaps data. Further OpenRouteservice now also supports the OGC OpenLS Utility Service (GeocCoder) and uses it for "search"-ing for names of places, streets etc. and zooming to the found place. |

Finaly the first complete Virtual City Model (CityGML LOD1) based on OpenStreetMap data was generated for the City of Rostock. The Kataster-, Vermessungs- und Liegenschaftsamt (KVL) Rostock donated the footprints of all buildings of Rostock after a falsification of less than one meter.
On request of the Cartography Research Group the KVL also provided the height information of all the buildings in August 2009.

Evacuation simulation in case of disasters and emergency situations is the topic of a work package in our project GDI-GRID. First results of a simulation covering the city of Heidelberg are shown in the image below. The simulation is embedded in an OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) and is being transferred to the middleware for D-GRID computing clusters.
User now can plan a route online at OSM-3D.org and then interactively fly along the route presented in 3D.
Currently the routing is available for cars (fastest/shortest) as well as for pedestrians or bicycles for all of Germany.
It is also possible to create an animation that follows the 3D route automatically.
OpenStreetMap is still growing extremely fast. In the weekly update of our geodatabase of Europe on 24.June 2009 we have imported 1.132.026 buildings from OpenStreetMap. This geodatabase is used both for
The founder of the OpenStreetMap project - Steve Coast - has visited the "OpenStreetMap im Rheinland"-Conference in Bonn.
He was delighted about the innovative applications based on OSM presented there, such as a 3D flythrough at OSM-3D.org or wheelchair routing with OpenRouteService.org and more.
Presentations, reports and photos from the conference, that was organized together with this years deegree day can be found at the following sites:
XNavigator is shown as an integrated client in the OGC Web Services, Phase 6
(OWS-6) final demonstration. The client is a decision support tool for first
responders in an emergency case. It is used for accessing and combining
multiple OGC services including Web Map Service (WMS), Catalog Service
(CSW), Web Feature Service (WFS), Open Location Services (OpenLS) Route
Service, and the experimental Web Map Tiling Service (WMTS). The dynamically
downloaded spatial information and 3D city models is used for assessing the
situation on site. The route service is used for calculating 3D driving
instructions as well as for finding interiour access routes to locations
within buildings. The demonstration shows how 3D indoor routes can be
visualized and combined with LOD4 indoor CityGML models.
